FLAS Fellowships for Summer Intensive Language Study
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships, authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and administered by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), provide Stanford undergraduate students with funding to undertake intensive study of Russian, East European or Central Asian languages in a full-time, pre-approved, accredited language study program during the summer, either domestically or abroad. Summer FLAS Fellowships provide a $3,500 stipend and up to $5,000 in tuition. Students may also be eligible for travel grants for overseas programs.

Academic Year
Academic Year Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) grant
Graduate Academic Year Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships provide funding to students enrolled in a graduate degree program at Stanford University to encourage the study of critical and less commonly taught foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies, or international aspects of professional studies. Requests for funding are considered through the Graduate Admissions application.

Baltic Short-term Travel/Research Grant (Academic Year & Summer)
CREEES is offering travel grants for short-term study and research trips to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Baltic Sea Region. Grants of up to $5000 will be awarded to Stanford University’s graduate students who are engaged in Russian and East European/Baltic studies and wish to travel to the Baltic region to attend conferences, conduct research, and participate in academic exchange with local faculty and students. Possible areas of research include the history, politics and culture of the Baltic states and region; international relations between Russia, the EU, and the USA; foreign and domestic policy and development of Estonia and the Baltic states; and e-governance, digital transformation, and (cyber) security.

Alternative Research Methods Grant Opportunity
CREEES is offering grants for Stanford Ph.D. students whose research plans have been disrupted by the war in Ukraine. The grant will support alternative research methods, such as the hiring of local researchers in Ukraine and Russia to conduct directed archival work, the digitization of archival materials, or other alternative methods that will grant students access to sources necessary to their dissertation research. Requests for funding are considered on a rolling basis.

CREEES Graduate Conference Travel Grant
CREEES has limited funds available to support Stanford graduate students during the academic year for travel to conferences focused on Russian, East European and Eurasian studies where they will be presenting papers related to their thesis research on the region. Requests for funding are considered on a rolling basis in the Autumn, Winter and Spring Quarters. Level of funding depends of specific needs, but typically awards are up to $500.
