Valerie Kivelson received her PhD at Stanford under the direction of Nancy Shields Kollmann. She is Thomas N. Tentler Professor of History at the University of Michigan, where she teaches Russian History and the History of Witchcraft. Her books include Cartographies of Tsardom: The Land and Its Meanings in Seventeenth-Century Russia (2006); Desperate Magic: The Moral Economy of Magic in Seventeenth Century Russia (2013); and most recently, Russia's Empires (2016), coauthored with Ronald Suny.
