Film screening & panel discussion with director Tim Slade, Norman Naimark, Stacey Jessiman de Nanteuil, and Sareta Ashraph.

Over the past century, cultural destruction has wrought catastrophic results across the globe. In Syria and Iraq, millennia of culture are being destroyed. The push to protect, salvage and rebuild has unfortunately moved in step with the destruction, and while the international community and individual nations have been scrambling to find legal, policy and practical solutions to stem the destruction, heroic individuals have been fighting back, risking and losing their lives to save the record of human cultures. Based on the book of the same name by Robert Bevan, The Destruction of Memory film delves into the complex story underlying cultural destruction — examining examples from WWII, the Former Yugoslavia, Mali and Syria, among other places, while also revealing the international community’s past decisions and actions that have allowed the issue of cultural genocide to remain hidden in the shadows for so long. Interviewees in the film include the Director-General of UNESCO, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, and other distinguished international experts, whose voices combine to address this urgent issue. Following the film, join film director Tim Slade and Stanford faculty for a panel discussion of the film and cultural genocide, including in Canada’s Indian Residential School system.
