Estonia’s foreign policy challenges, 2016-2017

Two months ago Estonia celebrated the 25th anniversary of the restoration of its independence. Never before has Estonia enjoyed uninterrupted independent statehood for 25 years nor has it been so well prepared and committed to preserving independence and promoting democracy. On the other hand, the global and European security situation is unstable and will likely remain as such for the unforeseeable future. The European Union and the United States are facing many challenges, from constantly changing security situations and "frozen" relations with Russia to illegal immigration and terrorism.

Marina Kaljurand's talk will focus on the strategies Estonia has used and will continue to use in tackling these global challenges and ensuring the country’s security and independence. For Estonia, the meaning of security is much wider than troops on the ground or Article 5 of NATO. It also means energy security, cyber security, economic prosperity, trade and investments, and the reputation and image of a country. Security means defending and developing democracy – globally, regionally and internally. Estonia's firm understanding is that solidarity and unity are the cornerstones for successfully dealing with these questions as well as for a strong, united and viable Europe.
