Joachim Popek

Joachim Popek holds the position of Assistant Professor at the University of Rzeszów. His research centers around the investigation of socio-economic dynamics within Central and Eastern Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. He is presently focusing on the transition from traditional resource usage to the 'scientific forestry' model in southeast Poland and western Ukraine. He specializes in digital humanities, particularly Historical Geographic Information Systems (HGIS). At Stanford, he will analyze 18th and 19th century forestry rationalization in Central and Eastern Europe, emphasizing the reconfiguration of forest relationships and functionality. The geographical scope of the study will correspond to the Central and Eastern European monarchies of that era, specifically, Prussia, Austria, and Russia. These entities were profoundly influenced by the developmental model and sustainability principles espoused by the German silvicultural framework, or Nachhaltigkeit.
