Dr. Andrew Kuchins served as President of the American University of Central Asia from May 2019 to June 2021, and was deported from the country in August 2021 after facing the possibility of more than 12 years in prison on bizarre drug charges. His story resulted from increasing anti-Americanism and state harassment as well as political infighting at the University, although to this day and likely forever, Kuchins cannot attribute how much causality to ascribe to different factors. He will share his experience and put it in broader context of US policy towards Central Asia.
