The events that took place in the ethnic Ukrainian lands  between 1914-1923 played a very important role in shaping twentieth-century Eastern Europe, and more generally the entire “short” twentieth century (1914-1991). In the words of  Dominic Lieven, "as much as anything, the First World War turned on the fate of Ukraine". The 1917 revolution was a product of the WWI. Thus, can we speak about a separate Ukrainian revolution?

Historians provide two mutually exclusive perspectives: there was no Ukrainian revolution, rather a conflict between Reds and Whites in Ukraine, and there was national Ukrainian revolution that surpassed all other revolutionary conflicts.

In this talk, Professor Hrytsak will present an alternative view that encompasses both perspectives and provides an additional dimension – a conflict between Bolshevik and Ukrainian peasants, which largely shaped the later Ukrainian famine and attitudes of Nazis and Soviets towards Ukraine during World War II.

Yaroslav Hrytsak is Professor of History at Ukrainian Catholic University, Lviv.
