Global Studies Minor with Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies Specialization (available autumn 2026)

The Stanford Global Studies minor, Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies specialization, is designed for undergraduates with an interdisciplinary interest in the history, politics, culture, and institutions of the REEES region or particular areas within it.

The Global Studies minor specialization in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies enables students to:

  • Develop essential skills and literacy in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies
  • Acquire valuable training in a language of Central Europe, Eastern Europe, or Eurasia
  • Prepare for graduate study, and/or a career in the public or private sector for which competency in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies is required or advantageous
Requirements
  • 3 units: Globally focused intro course (College 119, or in consultation with CREEES Faculty Director or Associate Director, another approved course, see "All Subplans: Global Studies General Requirement")
  • 0-10 units: Proficiency Requirement in a Language of either Central Europe; Eastern Europe; or Eurasia. (May be satisfied by any of the following:)
    • A one-year sequence at any level, or its equivalent (e.g. RUSSLANG 1A+2A)
    • Intermediate-High level Russian language proficiency on the ACTFL OPI
      • To inquire about demonstrating proficiency in other area languages, consult with the CREEES Faculty Director or Associate Director.
    • An accredited intensive summer language program may be considered in consultation with the CREEES Faculty Director or Associate Director.
  • ≥ 12 units: Core Courses (from pre-approved list, see "Subplan: Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies")
    • Core courses must be spread across at least 2, ideally 3, disciplines
    • Additional courses may be considered in consultation with the CREEES Faculty Director or Associate Director.
  • ≤ 3 units: REES 100/200; REES 100A/200A; REES 100B/200B
How to Declare

To declare the Global Studies minor with a Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies specialization, students must set an appointment with minor advisors Karla Oeler (koeler [at] stanford.edu (subject: REEES%20Minor.) (koeler[at]stanford[dot]edu)), CREEES Faculty Director, or John Turman (jturman [at] stanford.edu (subject: REEES%20Minor.) (jturman[at]stanford[dot]edu)), CREEES Acting Interim Associate Director, then declare the minor and subplan in Axess.
