An impromptu roundtable discussion on the recent events unfolding in the
Republic of Georgia was held in Encina Hall on August 14, 2008. CREEES
interim director John Dunlop moderated the discussion which included
participants from the Freeman Spogli Institute, the Hoover Institution, and
the Departments of Political Science and History.
John Dunlop, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, opened the round table by summarizing press accounts detailing the events beginning on August 8 in the Russian-Georgian conflict. Gail Lapidus, Senior Fellow Emerita at the Freeman Spogli Institute (FSI), outlined the larger strategic and security issues involved.

Two Draper Hills Summer Fellows at the Center for Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) with intimate knowledge of the region provided comments at the roundtable discussion: Eka Kemularia, head of staff of the Committee on Human Rights and Civil Integration for the Parliament of Georgia, reported testimony of relatives and associates living in the conflict zones. Grigory Shvedov, editor-in-chief of the 24/7 Internet edition of Caucasian Knot, provided a detailed account of the recent history of events in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
